Houzz Tour: Taking a Midcentury Home From a Maze to Amazing
A California ranch home’s formerly maze-like interior now flows with an open, indoor-outdoor layout
The entry features a bright aqua-colored door. Its floor-to-ceiling windows, glass sliding doors and clerestories introduce the home’s new open, airy interior with an indoor-outdoor flow.

Open on both sides to light and views, the home’s new living, dining and kitchen space is welcoming and alive. A wall between the kitchen and living area was removed to create the main gathering space. Tile floors from Daltile mimic the look of wood and run throughout the home.

The back wall of the main living space is painted black to anchor the space and has a built-in entertainment cabinet. The black wall also helps to minimize the appearance of the flat-screen TV mounted on the wall. The trio of silver pendant lights over the Restoration Hardware dining table are Topan V6 by Panton.

The minimalist kitchen features a sage green geometric tile backsplash that adds just enough visual interest to the space. The cabinets are Ikea cabinets with fronts custom made by a local company. The crisp white countertops are Caesarstone.
The light-filled master bedroom is on the street side but enjoys privacy because of the fence, outdoor patio and landscaping by Growsgreen Landscape Design.
In the bedroom wing, the master suite now includes a walk-through closet that leads to a bathroom with skylights above the sinks. Again, the design team used IKEA cabinets with custom-made fronts. The same wood-like tile used in the home’s public spaces is also used in the master bathroom.
Newly installed sliding glass doors open to a sunny courtyard, creating a flowing indoor-outdoor space for relaxing, dining and enjoying time with family and friends.

The new owners of this 1960s midcentury ranch saw potential despite the glass walls covered in plywood, a huge awning at the back of the house and a maze-like interior layout. Now the house opens to light and views with seamless indoor-outdoor connections.
The exterior, newly covered in Western red cedar, creates privacy for the family but opens up to a light-filled interior and open-plan living areas.
