Private Martial Arts Dojo, Green Valley, CA
Designed 2002, Completed 2003

Site
A large concrete block garage. The abandoned building has been weathering since it was started in the 1980s.

Program
Convert this abandoned, incomplete garage into a martial arts dojo / guest room / office with storage.

Exploration
Martial arts is a dichotomy - inwardly focused on rhythm, power, technique, breathing, and philosophy but used as a self-defense technique or in competition with others. How can this space support both the active and meditative aspects of martial arts?

Solution
Convertibility: Once the client and her guests are finished training, they can convert the dojo to a guest room by opening the triple-panel sliding door that separates the part-time office / part-time guest room from the rest of the space. In the japanese style, they can fold out the futon for overnght guests. Training with both garage doors open provides fresh air and a wide view of the natural surroundings.

Repose : We converted the random rectangular floor plan into a square dojo space with an adjacent changing area. The proportions of this unidirectional room lend it an air of repose. This symmetrical, centralized, neutral backdrop is perfect for vigorous martial arts training (in which the ultimate goal is perfection of the self).

Secrecy : Unbeknownst to participants in the training, one of the floor-to-ceiling panels opens up to revewl the closet and wine cellar.
